A general question we have when buying a gemstone that is related to a specific planets is, “Is that right for me?”, “Is my gemstone safe for me?” Or “will it bring negative effects instead of positive?” While this is a general doubt, it becomes more severe if the ruling planet of the gemstone is somehow connected to the 8th House in a birth chart of a person planning to wear.

An experienced Astrologer will be checking the following 3 major things before concluding the selection of Gemstone for a specific Kundali.

1. 8th House or planet in the 8th house

The 8th house is considered a Dusthana house and a Panaphara house. The 8th House represents the hidden, deep and transformative parts of our lives. It is also known as the house of death and transformation. It also relates to mysteries, occult, black magic, investigation, and accidents. On the good side, it also represents inheritance, shared resources, lottery, legacy, insurance, and in-laws.

When a planet is placed in the 8th House, the native’s life will be transformative. They will undergo many transformations during their lifetime regarding the theme that the planet represents.

First, we should check if the gemstone is ruled by a planet that is the 8th House Lord from the Moon sign or Lagna sign. Any planet sitting in the 8th House will activate transformations in the areas that particular planet represents. Hence, when we wear a gemstone related to the planet in the 8th House, we are activating it, therefore, bringing wanted or unwanted transformations and trials in our lives.

Therefore, One can wear the gemstone of a planet sitting in the 8th House in a good position and aspect. But one cannot use a gemstone of the planet that rules the 8th House, as in the 8th House lord.

Let us take an example of a chart.

The native of this chart was advised to wear a Yellow Sapphire (Kanakapushparagam), a gemstone for Jupiter. Though Jupiter is a Lord of 5th house which is a Trikona Sthana, after wearing Yellow Sapphire, the person felt their usual energy was drained. While checking the horoscope, we can see that the lord of the 8th house is placed in the 8th House. Even though one can wear the gemstone of the planet present in the 8th house, they have to avoid the ruler of the same.

That said, this should not be the sole determinant or the only way to decide if one can wear a particular gemstone or not.

So, what else should we check?

2. Badhaka Planet

The badhaka planet for the moon sign and the ascendant sign. A “Badhaka planet” is considered a planet that can create obstacles and challenges in the areas of life ruled by the houses it influences. This Sanskrit word translates to “obstruction” or “hindrance”.

To determine which is a badhaka planet for each moon or lagna sign, we should look at the specific house it rules, and it is calculated based on the modality of the moon or lagna sign.

For Movable Signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn): The 11th house from the ascendant is the Badhaka house, and its ruler is the Badhaka planet.

Aries: Aquarius (Saturn).

Cancer: Taurus (Venus).

Libra: Leo (Sun).

Capricorn: Scorpio (Mars).

For Fixed Signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius): The 9th house from the ascendant is the Badhaka house, and its ruler is the Badhaka planet.

Taurus: Capricorn (Saturn).

Leo: Aries (Mars).

Scorpio: Cancer (Moon).

Aquarius: Libra (Venus).

For Dual Signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces): The 7th house from the ascendant is the Badhaka house, and its ruler is the Badhaka planet.

Gemini: Sagittarius (Jupiter).

Virgo: Pisces (Jupiter).

Sagittarius: Gemini (Mercury).

Pisces: Virgo (Mercury).

For example, in the sample chart, for the Gemini moon, the 7th house is Sagittarius, and it is ruled by Jupiter. Here, Jupiter is a badhaka (an obstruction-causing planet). Therefore, a gemstone ruled by Jupiter should be avoided.

3. Position of the planet from the Lagna lord

The placement of the planet from the Lagna lord is also important to note. The planet should not be placed in the badhaka house or in 3, 6, 8, or 12th houses.

Going back to the sample chart, here we can see that Jupiter is placed in the 12th house from the Lagna lord Sun, which is not a good place to be positioned in.

The planet Jupiter is in a tough position based on all the above methods; therefore, using a yellow sapphire gemstone will not be beneficial to the native.

The ruling planet of a particular gemstone should be in a good position in at least 2 of the above methods for the native to use that stone.

There are still other methods to check if one can use a particular gemstone, but these should be checked as well to ensure that the Gemstone selected does not create more harm than expected benefits!

In conclusion, It is said that “A gemstone chosen with wisdom becomes a blessing; without it, a test.”

Every gemstone is a vessel of divine planetary energy. When chosen with proper astrological guidance, it can uplift, protect, and transform life in beautiful ways. At the same time, wearing the wrong stone without awareness may stir hidden challenges. This is why consulting the birth chart and understanding the role of the 8th house and Badhaka planets is so important. With the right wisdom, gemstones do not bring fear—they become sacred tools to align with cosmic energies and walk the path of harmony, prosperity, and spiritual growth.
